What Is Cholesterol
High cholesterol is a problem by which the majority of the population is suffering right now. High cholesterol has a detrimental effect not just in the heart but also on other organs. Hence, it becomes very important to know about cholesterol in brief. In this article we have tried to give a brief description about cholesterol, good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. Keep on reading the article to know more.
Let’s now understand what is actually cholesterol. Cholesterol is a waxy fat like substance which is produced from the liver. It is a necessary agent required for the formation of cell, hormones and vitamin D. Since cholesterol travels on its own to the bloodstream the liver produces lipoprotein which helps it to get transported. These lipoproteins are made from fat and protein. There are two major forms of these lipoproteins which are low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high protein high density lipoprotein (HDL). The excess content of LDL cholesterol which is carried by the low density lipoprotein is known as high cholesterol. This is very dangerous for the health as when left untreated it will lead to Heart Attack or even stroke. There are many diseases which occur due to the high cholesterol in the body one of the most important things about high cholesterol is that it does not give you any symptoms and hence you need to get your cholesterol levels checked on a regular basis.
This low density lipoprotein or LDL is known as Bad cholesterol as too high levels of this cholesterol may build up on the wall of your arteries. This building is known as cholesterol plaque. It may build up in the blood flow and raise the risk of formation of blood clots as they narrow down the arteries. Stroke is usually caused by these blood clots in the artery.
What is HDL cholesterol?
High density lipoprotein which is also known as good cholesterol helps return the LDL cholesterol to the liver. This needs to be removed from the body and hence helps to prevent the cholesterol plague which is formed due to the build up of this LDL cholesterol in the arteries. Having a healthy level of HDL cholesterol in the body helps to prevent heart diseases and keeps the overall functioning of the body at a good position.
Triglycerides and its effect
Now there is another type of lipoprotein which is known as triglyceride. It is different from cholesterol as the body uses triglycerides as a source of energy. Triglycerides are usually stored in the fat cells and are continuously circulated in the bloodstream. These triglycerides are derived from the calories which we get from the food items. High levels of triglycerides in your body may lead to some health problems. The main organ of attack of these triglycerides are the heart, brain and kidney and hence may lead to several other diseases. It is very important to regularly get tested for the triglyceride level in the body.
